Kockums Industrier’s Megaswing freight wagon opens a huge market for semitrailers on rail
At Lübeck Hafen Gesellschaft, Swedish rail freight wagon producer Kockums Industrier today presents a full scale prototype of Megaswing, a freight wagon that opens up a potentially huge market for long distance rail transports of semitrailers.
Today only some five percents of all European semitrailers can be moved on and off rail wagons. The vast majority of semitrailers are not suited for lifting – the standard procedure when going from road to rail and vice versa.
Kockums Industrier’s solution means that all semitrailers can enter and leave the train on their own wheels. Unlike most similar concepts previously presented, Kockums Industrier’s Megaswing is free from any costly fixed installations along the rail or on board the trailers and you will increase the efficiency and productivity when loading and un-loading. The only prerequisite is a fairly flat ground along the rail track that can carry a loaded truck and trailer.
The prototype shown at Lübeck Hafen Gesellshaft is fully functional and has been in regular service since January this year.
– When in full service this freight wagon will substantially improve transport economy as well as decrease carbon dioxide emission and congestion on European roads, concludes Björn Widell, managing director of Kockums Industrier in Malmö, Sweden.
